Diet Plan for a Sri Lankan Patient with Liver Disease

General Guidelines


1. Reduce Fat Intake:

   - Avoid fried foods and fatty meats.

   - Use healthy oils like olive oil or sunflower oil in small amounts.


2. Eat Small, Frequent Meals:

   - Have 5-6 small meals throughout the day to avoid overloading the liver.


3. Increase Fiber Intake:

   - Include whole grains (red rice, kurakkan), fruits, and vegetables for better digestion.


4. Choose Lean Proteins:

   - Include fish, skinless chicken, eggs (limit yolks), and plant-based proteins (dhal, green gram).


5. Limit Salt Intake:

   - Reduce salt in cooking and avoid salty foods like dried fish and pickles.


6. Avoid Alcohol Completely:

   - Alcohol worsens liver damage and must be avoided.


7. Stay Hydrated:

   - Drink plenty of water and avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks.


8. Limit Sugary Foods and Processed Foods:

   - Avoid sweets, sugary drinks, and processed snacks.


9. Include Antioxidant-Rich Foods:

   - Consume fruits like papaya, guava, and oranges for vitamins and antioxidants.


 

Sample Meal Plan

Early Morning

 - Warm water with lime or plain herbal tea (no sugar, no caffeine). 


Breakfast

Option 1:

- 1 cup of kurakkan porridge (with coconut milk in moderation).

- 1 boiled egg (white only) or a small portion of steamed fish.

- A side of sautéed greens (spinach, gotu kola).


Option 2:

- 2 string hoppers (made with red rice flour).

- Dhal curry (low salt, minimal oil).

- Coconut sambol (less coconut, no added salt).


 

Mid-Morning Snack

- A small banana or a papaya slice.

- A handful of unsalted nuts (almonds or cashews). 


Lunch

Main Meal:

- 1 cup of red rice or brown rice.

- Grilled or steamed fish or skinless chicken (low salt, no frying).

- Mixed vegetable curry (pumpkin, beans, bitter gourd) cooked with minimal oil.

- Fresh salad with cucumber, tomatoes, and lime juice.


 

Afternoon Snack

 - A handful of boiled green gram or roasted chickpeas (without salt). 


Dinner

Option 1:

- 1 chapati (whole wheat, no added salt).

- Lentil soup or dhal curry (low salt).

- Steamed or sautéed leafy greens.


Option 2:

- 1 small portion of boiled manioc or jackfruit curry (low salt).

- A mixed vegetable salad with lime dressing.


Bedtime Snack

 - ½ cup of low-fat milk or a small slice of papaya. 



Foods to Avoid


1. Fried and Oily Foods: Patties, vadai, fried snacks.

2. High-Salt Foods: Dried fish, pickles, instant noodles, and processed meats.

3. Sugary Foods and Drinks: Sweets, jaggery, sugary drinks, and fruit juices.

4. Fatty Meats and Full-Fat Dairy: Mutton, pork, full-cream milk, and cheese.

5. Alcohol: Must be completely avoided.


 

Lifestyle Tips


- Exercise Regularly: Light activities like walking or yoga are beneficial.

- Manage Stress: Practice mindfulness, meditation, or deep breathing exercises.

- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

- Avoid Alcohol and Smoking: Both can worsen liver damage.
